Is Wayne Brady a gout sufferer?
What’s a challenge without a few stumbling blocks? Let’s Make a Deal host, actor, and singer Wayne Brady had only just begun the M&P-sponsored 90-day physical transformation challenge when he suffered a setback. Brady’s hectic travel schedule adds to the confusion, but it’s nothing compared to what he went through in the first few weeks of the program: He was in excruciating pain in his foot “He was out of commission for a few days after thinking he had broken his toe. Brady, on the other hand, didn’t have a broken toe. He had gout (ouch), an arthritic disorder caused by excessive blood levels of uric acid.
“Brady says, “I’d never experienced gout before.” “I had no idea what it was. As a result, it was a fascinating time. I had been eating a lot of salmon and red meat in an attempt to eat healthily, and I believe this increased my uric acid.”
Fortunately, Brady’s gout was only a momentary setback, and he was able to resume his regimen with minimal disruption. Salmon and red meat were mostly removed from his diet due to the greater fat content of those two items, particularly the saturated fat contained in beef, which was thought to be the primary cause of his toe discomfort. Aside from that, his nutrition plan has been largely unchanged from Month 1: high protein, high-quality carbs, and healthy fats.
Brady’s training, on the other hand, has changed. The majority of the basic motions he did in the first four weeks of the program have carried over into Month 2, but trainer Mike Vale has increased the intensity by integrating supersets into his workouts a tactic that maximizes fat burning while also triggering muscular gains. At this point in Brady’s training, straight sets are almost non-existent. The program has already yielded remarkable benefits so far.
“Brady says, “I’m definitely noticing more growth and definition in my arms and chest, which is quite great.” “I’m also increasing my cardio to ensure that my difficult area, my abs, get carved out so that I don’t wind up looking blocky. My back has also widened and my face has leaned out.”
“It was tough the first couple of weeks since I was on the road so much,” Brady adds. “I’m still on the road, but it’s become second nature to me, like getting up, brushing my teeth, and putting on my pants: ‘I’ve got to do this, I’ve got to do that, and I’ve got to work out.’ After that, I’ll be free to do whatever else I want for the rest of the day. I normally do an afternoon workout right before my concert when I’m on my own because it gives me a boost of energy and helps me warm up. So I work out, wash, change, and go onstage right away.”
Brady indicated before the challenge that his goal was to reduce 5 to 10 pounds in order to obtain a leaner, more defined physique. But, much as his circumstances altered as a result of his gout flare-up, his bodyweight outlook has changed as well. But it’s all for the better: he may not lose 5 to 10 pounds, but he’ll have significantly altered his body composition, which should be the fundamental goal of any program.
“I was 172 pounds when I started,” Brady says. “Initially, I planned to stay between 160 and 165 pounds. However, because of the lifting and muscle gain, it appears that my body prefers to maintain around 170, even when I eat clean. So I believe I’ll end up remaining right here; the weight has simply been redistributed.”
Wayne Brady’s physical makeover is completed in the August 2012 edition of M&P.
During the second four weeks of the challenge, here’s a sample week of Brady’s training regimen, developed by trainer Mike Vale. Because Vale changes Brady’s training week to week, the emphasis is on sample. “We’re always changing things up,” adds the Los Angeles-based personal trainer.
