Where Is The Moon Tonight Astrology

The Moon is in the sign of Sagittarius today. Today there is no empty Moon period. The Moon is in its Waxing Gibbous phase and is waxing. The Full Moon was on the 7th, while the First Quarter Moon was on the 8th.

Is the Supermoon visible tonight?

When the moon (in its monthly orbit around Earth) comes closer to or further away from the sun, it is called a new moon.

When the moon (in its monthly orbit) is on the opposite side of the Earth from the sun, it is called a full moon.

The moon’s closest point to Earth in a month is called perigee, which comes from the basic words peri, which means near, and geo, which means Earth.

Several times a year, the new or full moon aligns closely with perigee. When this happens, we have a supermoon, to use popular culture terminology.

The term “supermoon” as we know it now was invented by astrologer Richard Nolle in 1979. A supermoon, according to Nolle’s definition, is a full or new moon that is within 90 percent of its closest point to Earth. Different websites now calculate supermoons in different ways. EarthSky makes advantage of astronomer Fred Espenak’s supermoon dates. He’s most recognized for his work at NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center, where he became a world authority on eclipse forecasting. The variations in the moon’s orbit over each lunar cycle are factored into his method of estimating supermoons.

Do you adore the moon? Every day in 2022, see what phase it is in. Lunar calendars from EarthSky are now available! We’re moving quickly!

Full supermoons in 2022

These are the dates and moon distances for supermoons in 2022, according to Fred Espenak’s full supermoon table. These moon distances are in comparison to the average lunar distance of 238,900 miles (384,472 km).

A total lunar eclipse will be seen from North America on the supermoon of May 16, 2022.

The July 13 supermoon will be the closest supermoon in 2022. The full moon and lunar perigee occur on the same day on that date.

New supermoons in 2022

For new moon supermoons, Fred Espenak does not have a table. However, we may deduce the dates from his Astropixels website’s other tables. In 2022, we’ll get new supermoons on:

Supermoon hype?

Some astronomers object to the term “supermoon.” Supermoons are dubbed “hype” by some. Supermoons, on the other hand, aren’t a gimmick. They’re unique. The term “supermoon” is now widely known and used. Even diehards are starting to use it lately, we’ve noticed. The power of folklore is undeniable.

The hoopla around supermoons most likely began from a misunderstanding when the term “supermoon” first became popular… perhaps a few decades ago? Some individuals incorrectly assumed that a full supermoon would appear substantially larger to the naked eye. It isn’t the case. Most people nowadays seem to understand that supermoons don’t appear to be any larger than regular full moons.

True, experienced observers claim to be able to tell the difference. You’d have to be a sharp watcher to notice it, though. Most people can’t tell the difference between a supermoon and a regular full moon.

Do supermoons, on the other hand, appear to be brighter than regular full moons? Yes! By a significant margin. A supermoon has a disk that is 15% larger and brighter than a full moon of typical size. It is 30 percent larger and brighter than a micro-moon (the smallest full moon of the year). So, on the night of a full supermoon, walk outside. Even if you’re only a casual observer of the moon, you might notice that the supermoon is unusually brilliant!

For comparison, the size difference between a supermoon and a micromoon is proportionally similar to that between a quarter and a nickel in the United States. At the moon’s distance, the difference isn’t visible to the naked eye. However, the difference in brightness is significant.

By the way, these moons were once known as perigean full moons or perigean new moons in astronomy before they were dubbed supermoons. There’s no doubt about it. Supermoon has a better ring to it.

High tides from new and full supermoons

Furthermore, all supermoons are capable of causing higher-than-normal tides. Spring tides are high tides that occur during the full or new moon. Perigean spring tides, or king tides, are high tides that occur at perigee during a full or new moon. They’re also referred to as supermoon tides nowadays.

These perigean, king, or supermoon spring tides tend to be a day or two ahead of the new or full moon date. The geometry of individual coastlines, as well as local weather conditions, play a big role in these particularly high tides. They tend to be a day or two behind the supermoons.

Do supermoon tides that are exceptionally high cause flooding? Possibly, yes, and possibly, no. Flooding is most common when a powerful weather system coincides with a particularly high spring tide.

The recurring cycle of supermoons

After 14 lunar months, the full moon supermoon series of 2022 will recur (14 returns to full moon). This is because 14 full moon returns almost exactly equal 15 perigee returns, a period of one year, one month, and 18 days.

The average lunar month (from full moon to full moon or from new moon to new moon) is 29.53059 days, while the average anomalistic month (from perigee to perigee or from apogee to apogee) is 27.55455 days. Hence:

15 anomalistic months (15 lunar perigee returns) multiplied by 27.55455 days equals 413.318 days

Given that supermoons occur every 413 days (about one year, one month, and 18 days), we can expect full moon supermoons to occur in 2023, around one month and 18 days later.

In 2022, the full moons in May, June, July, and August will all be supermoons. The new moons of January, February, and December in 2022 will be supermoons. The full supermoon on July 13, 2022, will be the closest and brightest of the year.

What is the significance of the Moon’s appearance tonight?

When the Moon is rising or setting, why does it appear so large? The Moon illusion is the name given to the psychological trick that our brains perform on us. Photographs show that the Moon is the same breadth near the horizon as it is when it is high in the sky, but human eyes don’t see it that way. As a result, it’s an optical illusion based on how our brains process visual information. Even though we’ve been witnessing it for thousands of years, no satisfactory scientific explanation for why we see it exists.

Is the Moon currently close to Earth?

The Moon’s current distance from the Earth is 396,717 kilometers, or 0.002652 Astronomical Units. It takes 1.3233 seconds for light to travel from the Moon to us.

On a full moon, what should you do?

People are generally moody, sensitive, and tired in the days leading up to a full Moon. It’s a good idea to take a moment and ask yourself how you’re feeling physically and mentally. How are your personal and professional relationships? Being aware of your emotions will help you stay grounded and make beneficial adjustments more quickly. The full Moon is an excellent opportunity to reflect and re-calibrate.

Why is the Moon tonight so large and orange?

When the Moon is still touching the horizon just after it rises, it appears to be very enormous. However, it’s really merely the outcome of your brain’s trickery.

Many people believe that our atmosphere magnifies the image, but the explanation is far more straightforward:

The Moon is dwarfed by the enormous hemisphere of the skies when it is high overhead, and appears to our eyes as a little disk in the sky.

When the Moon is low, on the other hand, it is seen in relation to earthly objects like chimneys or trees, whose size and shape convey scale. When your brain compares the size of the Moon to the size of trees, buildings, or other landmarks, the Moon appears gigantic!

Look again when the Moon is higher up on the horizon the next time you observe a massive Moon on the horizon. With nothing to compare it against, the Moon will appear much smaller.

What distinguishes the Moon illusion from a “supermoon”? Make sure you’re familiar with the supermoon so you don’t get them mixed up!

Why Does the Moon Appear Orange When Low in the Sky?

You may observe that the Moon appears to be more orange or red in hue when it looks extra-large towards the horizon. This is where the atmosphere of the Earth comes into play.

The Moon is farther away from you when it is low in the sky than when it is straight overhead. As a result, light reflected off a horizon-hugging Moon must travel a greater distance and pass through more air particles to reach your eyes.

The shorter wavelengths of light (the “blue ones”) have been scattered by the air by the time we experience this light, leaving only the longer wavelengths (the “red ones”) to reach our eyes. The bluish tones are so filtered out for us, and the Moon takes on an orange hue!

When the Moon is directly overhead, however, its light does not have to pass through as many air particles, allowing blue wavelengths to reach our sight.

The Moon Illusion: How to See Through It

Don’t trust what you’re seeing? Here’s how to shrink the Moon from its colossal size to something more manageable!

Close one eye and look at the larger Moon via the tube. It’ll appear to be normal.

Now close one of your eyes in the tube and open the other. The Moon has grown in size once more.

Observe the Moon with the tube while it is high in the sky and then again when it is low. Both times, the Moon will appear to be the same size.
