In 2022, what are the unique moons?
When the moon is in its full phase, it passes behind the Earth in relation to the sun and may pass into Earth’s shadow, resulting in a lunar eclipse. A total lunar eclipse occurs when the moon is completely engulfed by the Earth’s shadow. A partial, or even penumbral lunar eclipse (when the moon only skirts the outermost zone of Earth’s shadow) occurs when the moon only partially passes through the Earth’s shadow at other times.
Two lunar eclipses will occur in 2022: a total lunar eclipse on May 16 and a total lunar eclipse on November 8.
North and South America, Europe, and Africa will all see the total moon eclipse on May 16. According to NASA’s Eclipse website, it will begin at 9:32 p.m. EDT (0132 GMT) and endure for nearly 5 hours and 18 minutes. At 12:12 a.m. EDT, the eclipse will reach its height (0412 on May 17 GMT).
On November 8, a total lunar eclipse will be seen across Asia, Australia, the Pacific Ocean, and the Americas. According to NASA, the eclipse will begin at 3:02 a.m. EST (0802 GMT) and run for around 5 hours, 53 minutes, with totality lasting 1 hour, 24 minutes. It will reach its highest point around 6 a.m. EST (1100 GMT).
Because the moon’s orbit around the Earth is inclined, it does not align with Earth’s shadow every month, hence a lunar eclipse does not occur every month.

In March 2022, will there be a full moon?
You don’t have to wait till the wee hours of the morning! On Thursday evening, look for the stunningly bright Moon as it climbs above the horizon. Try again if the weather is bad on Thursday night! On Friday night, the Moon will also be full. Find out when the Moon will appear in your location.
If it rains lightly on Thursday, March 17, you might be able to see a rare phenomena known as a moonbow. A moonbow is similar to a solar rainbow, except it is generated when moonlight (rather than sunlight) is refracted by airborne water droplets. Moonbows are only visible when the full Moon is low in the sky, so seek for one after sunset when the sky is dark. Learn more about moonbows by clicking here.
Because of the “Moon illusion,” which occurs when the Moon appears larger when it is near comparison objects than when it is high in the sky without any references, this March Moon will appear unusually huge to us when it is near the horizon.
Why Is It Called the Worm Moon?
The Old Farmer’s Almanac uses full Moon names from a variety of sources, including Native American, Colonial American, and European sources. Each full Moon name was traditionally attributed to the entire lunar month in which it occurred, rather than just the full Moon.
Surprising Truth Behind the Worm Moon Name
Worm Moon is the term given to the full Moon in March. We used to think its name related to the earthworms that emerge as the soil warms up in the spring. This attracts robins and other birds, signaling the arrival of spring.
However, further investigation showed a different explanation. Captain Jonathan Carver, who visited the Naudowessie (Dakota) and other Native American tribes in the 1760s, reported that the name Worm Moon refers to a different kind of “worm”beetle larvaethat emerge from the thawing bark of trees and other winter hideouts around this time.
Alternative March Moon Names
The March Moon has a number of names that refer to the transition from winter to spring. Some, like the Eagle Moon, Goose Moon (Algonquin, Cree), or Crow Comes Back Moon (Northern Ojibwe), allude to the appearance (or reappearance) of specific animals, while others refer to seasonal signs:
- The Sugar Moon (Ojibwe) signals the beginning of the sap flow in sugar maple trees.
- The Pueblo (Wind Strong Moon) refers to the strong windy days that occur at this time of year.
- The Sore Eyes Moon (Dakota, Lakota, Assiniboine) accentuates the glaring rays of late-winter sunlight reflected off melting snow.
The Lenten Moon
The full Moon in March is also significant in religion. This Moon is known as the Lenten Moon in Christianity if it is the last full Moon of the winter season (that is, if it falls before the spring equinox) or the Paschal Full Moon if it is the first full Moon of spring (i.e., if it occurs after the spring equinox).
The full Moon in March (March 18, 2022) falls before the spring equinox (March 20, 2022), making it the Lenten Moon this year. The full Moon in April (April 16, 2022) will be the first full Moon after the spring equinox, determining the date of Easter this year. Learn more about how Easter is calculated.
