The pop culture that has developed around the novel has been unable to fully comprehend the wealth of occult and esoteric elements in Bram Stoker’s classic.
“There are darknesses in life, and there are lights; you are one of the lights,” the metaphysician Abraham Van Helsing says to Mina. (Page 181 of Dracula)
When Jonathan Harker first encountered Dracula at the castle, he was described as being “dressed in black from head to foot” in his diary. p. 15 of Dracula
For instance, “There was a dazzling full moon, with thick black, driving clouds, which cast the whole scene into a momentary tableau of light and shade as they raced past,” illustrates how the idea of the struggle between light and darkness is woven into the very fabric of the book. (P. 89 of Dracula) With his large black hat, his all-black costume, his four black horses tethered to his black carriage, the black windows on his castle, his travels on the black sea, and his nightly mischief, Dracula is clearly connected with “blackness.” (pg. 9,13,332)
On the other hand, Mina is thought of as one of life’s lights and is connected to light. The two lighthouses at the entrance to Whitby Harbor, directly below St. Mary’s Church, provided a superb search light for her beloved stone seat in the cemetery at St. Mary’s Church.
Associations with the Zodiac
The astrological zodiac is also linked to Count Dracula from Bram Stoker’s works. He has the characteristics of the Leo astrological sign. Leo is the astrological sign that stands for dominance, willpower, kingship, authority, and the need for approval. The principal animal sign of the zodiac is Leo.
The lion rules the forest and is king of the beasts. Examples of Dracula’s association with the sign of Leo include the following:

In his classic, Bram Stoker uses an idealized astrological pattern. May is when the book begins, and November is when it ends. Approximately seven astrological signs make up this time frame.
The Sun, a sign of vigor and authority, is Leo’s ruling planet. The Sun is the first decanate of Leo, Jupiter is the second, and Mars is the third (3rd). These planets stand for royalty, openness, and impulsive willpower, respectively.
The following exchange between Dracula and Mina exemplifies Leo as a whole:
Then he mockingly said to me, “And so you would play your brains against mine, like the others.” You would aid these men in their pursuit of me and hinder my plans if you did!
Gold is the metal connected to the Leo astrological sign. Jonathan Harker said, “As it was, the tip just split the material on his coat, producing a broad opening from which… a stream of gold coins,” as he came close to stabbing Count Dracula in the heart. (Page 302 of Dracula)
The Sun would be in the sign of Aquarius at the end of the book, assuming that Count Dracula’s campaign of mayhem started when he was at the height of his power in the sign of Leo, which represents the craving for recognition. The Sun was thus in its dignity in Leo at the beginning and in its detriment in Aquarius at the conclusion.
Remember how Count Dracula first appeared in the book wearing a pompous huge black hat? But Dracula was spotted escaping from England while donning a straw hat as the tide of events began to turn against him! The polar opposite of the sign of Leo is the astrological sign of Aquarius.
The following quote from Mina is significant because the sign of Aquarius is ruled by giant birds: “Shewas fast sleeping, and by her, seated on the window-sill, was something that looked like a good-sized bird.” (P. 94, “Dracula in his changeling form”) Uranus, the planet of reversals and upheavals, is the contemporary planet that governs the astrological sign of Aquarius.
Count Dracula bragged to Jonathan Harker upon his arrival at his castle, “Ah, sir, you dwellers in the city cannot enter into the feelings of the hunter.” (P. 18 of Dracula) This Count Dracula comment will be made fun of as the story develops.
Madam Mina cries out as the effort to eliminate the Count gets under way: “I can’t help but feel incredibly excited. Anybody who is being pursued as much as the Count should be pitied, I believe. That’s right, this isn’t even a beast; it’s not even human.” (Page 226 of Dracula) Remember that Count Dracula says he battles for supremacy “like the lion battles.” (P. 28 of Dracula)
Dracula and the Tarot
Count Dracula is also connected to a number of major and minor arcana cards in the Miss Pamela Colman Smith-created Tarot deck. The major arcana contains
- IX An elderly man in black clothing is THE HERMIT, and he is perched on a mountain with sharp peaks;
- XVI THE TOWER depicts a castle on a lofty mountaintop being struck by lightning; and
- The satanic goat is depicted in XV THE DEVIL sitting in a position of authority and dominion.
The minor arcana contains:
- ACE of SWORDS depicts an unsheathed sword held upright with a broken peace garland dangling from the crown of a king at its top;
- In the image IV SWORDS, a young man is depicted lying on a coffin with a sword engraved on its side. (Remember that the man is lying inside a church);
- A nobleman clutching a globe of the world in his right hand and gazing out over the sea is depicted in II WANDS standing on the castle’s battlements.
Regarding the conflict between “Good” and “Evil,” as embodied by Mina and Dracula, metaphysician Abraham Van Helsing notes that Mina has a “man-brain” and Dracula has a “child-brain” (pp. 232, 335). (p. 398). According to the metaphysician, the’man-brain’ is not completely selfish and has not closed itself off from God’s favor, which is the distinction between the two sorts of brains. The “child-brain,” on the other hand, is completely selfish.
Mina (man-brain) and Dracula (child-brain) are two cards in the Tarot’s main arcana that unmistakably and clearly correspond with each other. These are the EMPRESS CARD and the DEVIL CARD, respectively. Through an occult kabalistic technique described in a book named the Kabala Of Numbers by “Sepharial,” the connection between these two cards and the figures of Mina and Dracula is established (published by David McKay in 1920).
The steps of the kabalistic approach that develops the occult connection between these cards and two characters are explained in the following succinctly:
1) The so-called “Hebrew Code” is made up of a number of groups of letters from the English alphabet, each of which corresponds to a particular number: (From page 30 of Kabala of Numbers)
2) From page 62 of the Kabala of Numbers:
The “Hebrew Code” is already given, and a value is assigned to each letter of the alphabet. After multiplying these values by the letters’ inverse order, the results are then added together. The kabalistic key number is the unit value of the sum of the products. A Tarot reading is provided once this key number is spoken.
3) The phrase “inverse order of the letters” in “2” above relates to the precise amount of letters in a selected name. The word “MINA” in this instance has four letters, while the word “DRACULA” has seven. The vocabulary of entry #2 above will be easily understood after reading the explanation of the kabalistic technique that follows:
4) The term “unit value” denotes the total of the integers that make up the sum of the products, i.e., 3 + 0 = 3.
The third card in the major arcana of the Tarot, which was developed by Miss Pamela Colman Smith, corresponds to the unit value of three. THE EMPRESS is the third card in the main arcana. First offspring of the divine will and creativity are some of this card’s designations (Kabala of Numbers, p. 27)
Remember that Madam Mina is referred to as such by the metaphysician Abraham Van Helsing:
She is one of the women that God Himself created in order to demonstrate to men and other women that there is a heaven that we may access and that its light is possible to exist on earth. So true, so sweet, so noble, so little an egoistand let me tell you, that’s rare in this day and age, when everyone is so doubtful and self-centered.
One other major arcana Tarot card, “THE MUZZLED LION” (VIII), depicts a woman in white with an infinity sign over her head gently closing the mouth of a lion in addition to the EMPRESS CARD (III) of the Tarot Deck created by Miss Pamela Colman Smith. Conquest, tenacity, and vitality are some of the card’s meanings. (Page 28 of Kabala of Numbers)
Therefore, 7 + 8 = 15 is the unit value of the sum of the numbers “78.” The key number that corresponds to the 15th Tarot card in the major arcana, XV THE DEVIL, is “15.” This card has various names including “evil,” “malice,” and “lawlessness.” (Page 29 of Kabala of Numbers)
Remember how Madam Mina was challenged by Count Dracula for daring to pit her intelligence against his? (Page 284 of Dracula)
Finally, I’d like to bring up Alice’s remark from “The Red Queen was screaming at Alice in “Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland” as she was about to wake up from the dread of a bad dream, “Off with her head!” Alice said, “Who cares for you? You’re nothing more than a pile of cards!” (Alice in Wonderland and Through the Looking Glass, page 109)

Johnny Mavis is how old?
Real-life husband and wife Nick Offerman and Megan Mullally provide the voices for Jonathan’s (Andy Samberg) parents. Dracula is 539 years old, Mavis is 125, and Jonathan is 28 years old when this movie takes place, which is seven years after the original Hotel Transylvania (2012).
Mavis and Johnny did they Zing?
- The only creature that has been known to zing more than once is Drac.
- In a deleted scene, he zinged Martha for the first time.
- When he first encounters Captain Ericka Van Helsing on the Legacy ship, he zinged for the second time.
- In the same way that widowers (men who have lost their spouses through death and have not remarried) and widows (women who have lost their spouses through death and have not remarried) can remarry if the husband or wife has passed away, it is possible that if a monster’s soulmate dies (such as Martha), the monster may zing more than once.
- A minor fan theory suggests that Ericka Van Helsing might be Martha’s reincarnation, which fits with the notion that “a zing only happens once in your lifetime.” The fact that Ericka is Martha resurrected in a human body may have helped to explain why she fell in love with him so quickly, as she was still thinking about Dracula and her love for him.
- Despite the sentiments Dennis and Winnie have for one another, they haven’t actually zinged yet. When Winnie kisses him in Hotel Transylvania 3: Summer Vacation, Dennis is depicted as feeling a little uneasy and clearly flushed. He also makes an effort to avoid making eye contact with her when she flirts with him so that they can zing afterwards. Because he is not yet emotionally mature enough to deal with having such feelings for his best buddy, Dennis claims that he is too young to zing.
- Because a human child named Jonathan Loughran really zinged with a female vampire named Mavis Dracula, it is questionable whether only monsters or humans can zing.
Tom Ellis: Is he a Scorpio?
Consider it like this: Satan is a fallen angel who was exiled because he disagreed with God’s teachings. He exiled Lucifer as a result of his refusal to accept anything that God taught his servants. What if you then consider how a Scorpio would respond if someone told them they had to follow another person’s instructions without questioning anything? It will proceed in a very same manner.
Again, this is undoubtedly due to the fact that Tom Ellis is a Scorpio and I’m now watching Lucifer.
