The study that follows supplements the research done by Dr. Wang using national data gathered in late 2019 by the survey research company YouGov for the iFidelity Survey.
1 It looks at 1,282 people who have never been married and uses relational, attitude, and demographic determinants of extramarital affairs. But unlike earlier studies, this new analysis defines extramarital affair as a “married person who, without their spouses’ knowledge or agreement, engages in physical sexual activity with someone other than their spouse. The general pattern is fairly similar with findings from earlier studies, despite the stronger definition of cheating than was previously utilized.
The iFidelity findings imply that men are more likely to report ever having had an extramarital affair, as with almost all studies of such relationships. According to the survey, 10% of ever-married women and 20% of ever-married males admitted to having an affair in the past. 2
Other demographic factors are connected to self-reported infidelity as well, notwithstanding the importance of these gender disparities. Non-Hispanic White participants had a lower rate of extramarital affairs reported than other participants, as seen in Figure 2. People with less education also revealed more affairs, while those with four-year degrees or more revealed less. Age, political leaning, and income were not connected to self-reported adultery, though.
In order to investigate the attitudes and relationship quality that are connected to having an extramarital affair, this analysis went beyond Dr. Wang’s research agenda. These relationships are shown in Figures 3a and 3b. Participants in the iFidelity survey were more likely to self-report an extramarital affair if they had previously been betrayed by a spouse. When asked which of the nine activities listed above they believed to be cheating, 70% of participants said the following: “ranked seven or more of the acts as “cheating,” with 30% labeling more than seven of them as such. Comparatively to their more lenient counterparts, participants who classified more than six actions as cheating were less likely to report extramarital affairs. Low levels of extramarital affairs were also correlated with both reporting to be “extremely content in the relationship” and feeling that a relationship was “very solid.
Last but not least, whereas attendance at religious worship services was not connected to cheating, personal value of religion was.
The variables were entered into the same model to determine which of them were connected to extramarital affairs even after accounting for the other variables after these fundamental statistical associations were discovered. In terms of demographics, Hispanic participants reported more affairs than White, non-Hispanic individuals, while women still reported fewer affairs than males. In the model with numerous variables, no other demographic factors were linked to extramarital affairs. Extramarital affairs were largely connected to all of the attitude and relational variables. A strict definition of infidelity, the belief that religion is very important in one’s own life, and the perception of one’s relationship as stable were all less likely to be associated with reporting an extramarital affair. However, having been the victim of cheating was positively associated with reporting an extramarital affair.
These results imply that extramarital affairs are related to demographic, attitudinal, and relational factors. Among the factors that people may influence, having a secure relationship, adhering to a stricter definition of infidelity, and placing a high value on religion all predict a decreased risk of cheating on one’s spouse.
