In the Greek myth of Theseus and the Minotaur, Theseus has to defeat a half-bull, half-man creature known as the Minotaur. Athenians would be brought to the Minotaur to eat, and this monster lived in a labyrinth in Crete. The Minotaur was slain by Theseus, who also protected the city of Crete from the evil King Minos.
Gemini (May 22June 21)
Castor and Polydeuces, half-brothers, are the zodiac signs of Gemini, the twins. Polydeuces was mortal, whereas Castor was immoral. Castor and Polydeuces were known as the Dioscuri because of their unbreakable bond. Poseidon granted the Dioscuri the ability to assist shipwrecked mariners while they prayed since they possessed the power to calm the choppy waves.
Castor died in the conflict and was sent to the afterlife. When Polydeuces learned that his brother had passed away, he pleaded with Zeus to send him to the afterlife as well. Polydeuces declined Zeus’ invitation to move into Olympus because he found it too difficult to live without his brother.
Zeus allowed Castor and Polydeuces to spend alternate days on Olympus and in the underworld, dividing their time between the two places.
Zeus immortalized the Dioscuri’s image in the constellation Gemini as a final tribute. Two bright stars in a group of dimmer stars make up the constellation.
Cancer (June 22July 23)
A crab is the symbol for the constellation Cancer. Greek mythology features the crab during Hercules’ second labor. When a huge crab sent by Hera threatened Hercules while performing a feat, Hera ordered him to destroy the Lerna Hydra. The crab stuck its claws into Hercules’ foot. Hercules crushed the crab to death by stepping on it with the power of his immense strength.
Hera was responsible for honoring the crab by putting a picture of it among the stars in the Cancer constellation.
Leo (July 24August 23)
The Leo constellation is symbolized by a lion, continuing the theme of Hercules’ 12 labors. Hercules was instructed to bring back the Nemean Lion’s skin during his first labor. As Hercules returned from his labor, he had killed the lion by strangling it and was wearing its skin on his back.
Virgo (August 24September 23)
The Gregorian calendar used in the northern hemisphere and the Greek zodiac calendar line up perfectly. Around September 2123, the autumnal equinox occurs during this period. Virgo represents the shifting of the seasons, particularly the afterlife after death. It places a strong emphasis on the value of traits like bravery and selflessness.
The worship of these deities can reveal information about the significance of knowledge and intellect in a particular ancient society, which makes the gods of wisdom and knowledge particularly fascinating in this perspective. In contrast to Sparta, for instance, Athens was the epicenter of intellectual life in the ancient world. Athena is the goddess of wisdom. The illustrious thinkers and philosophers of antiquity originated in Athens.
However, why is Athena a virgin or Virgo? One of the stories had her killing her father for attempting to rape her. Another myth claims that Hephaestus made an unsuccessful attempt to wed her. Aphrodite, the goddess of love, opposes Athens. It is important to remember that ancient Greek mythology is not a single, cohesive body of knowledge. Rather, myths frequently present the same story in multiple ways or even contradict one another. Even while some traditions mention Athena’s offspring, the Parthenon, the name of her most important temple in Athens, stresses her purity.
There is an intriguing connection between these two.
